Wine Reviews: Concha y Toro > Casillero del Diablo
http://www.casillerodeldiablo.com/
Casillero del Diablo offers wine lovers the very special opportunity to
participate in the propagation of a century old legend known throughout the
world. In the 19th century, the founder of Concha y Toro, Don Melchor,
discovered that his vineyard workers were sampling his greatest wines. To
discourage this action, Don Melchor spread the rumour that his deepest, darkest
cellar was the Casillero del Diablo (Cellar of the Devil), so that no one would
dare go in there. It worked, and a legend was born. Today, this mysterious and
legendary cellar continues to hold the finest, estate grown wines of Casillero
del Diablo.

Private Reserve
2005
Assemblage of selected grapes from Pirque and Peumo vineyards. The wine
comprises 65% Cabernet Sauvignon from Pirque, the origin of Casillero del
Diablo, in the Maipo Valley and 35% Syrah from the hillsides of Peumo in the
Rapel Valley. Casillero del Diablo Reserva Privada has been aged in French oak
barrels for 14 months.
Origin - Vineyards
Pirque Cabernet Sauvignon
Pirque’s vineyards, in the Maipo Valley, are fully mature and deliver the best
possible balance and quality year-in year-out.
Located in one of the coolest parts of the Maipo Valley, the vineyard is set on
a Maipo River terrace, a kilometer from its current course. The thin,
nutrient-poor sandy-loam soil is of alluvial origin and affords good drainage.
Vines rooted here naturally curb grape yields producing more concentrated fruit.
Maipo's generous weather, with its warm days and cold nights, assists tannin
ripening and preserves the fruit's color and aroma.
Peumo Syrah
Syrah comes straight from Peumo vineyards planted on foothills in the Rapel
Valley.
South-facing the vineyard is open to the influence of evening breezes off the
nearby Cachapoal River, and is a cooler spot within a notably warmer valley.
The mostly clayish soils and inclined terrain favor drainage and, as a result,
balanced vines with smaller, more concentrated berries. Long summers help the
grapes ripen fully and properly and thus further their depths of character and
color.
Tasting Notes
Colour:
Deep, intense and brilliant ruby-red.
Aroma:
Blackcurrant, red cherry and plum notes from Cabernet Sauvignon combine with
Syrah-endowed fresh black fruits -blackberry and plum- and traces of white
pepper and spices. The 14-month ageing in French barrels adds another layer of
aromatic complexity with hints of vanilla, smoke and cedar.
Palate:
Smooth and elegant tannins play off the firm and good structure. This wine
strikes a very good balance between fruit and wood-associated features, yet
retains vibrant acidity and juicy tannins.

Cabernet Sauvignon
Originally from Bordeaux, France, this is currently the most ubiquitous variety
on a worldwide scope, a feat that is largely due to the fact that Cabernet was
able to adapt successfully to almost every type of soil. When young, its most
pervasive trait is the forcefulness of its tannins, which tend to soften over
time and give way to exceptional, elegant, good-bodied, flavorful and round
wines characterized by pepper, black fruit and cassis notes.

Soil Hillside and riverbank.
Aging 8 months in small American oak barrels, 70% of the blend.
