Navarro Correas

RATING
89
2001 Navarro Correas Gran Reserva Altos del Rio
Malbec, Mendoza, $23

Deeply colored, with a potent bouquet of leather, earth, lavender, chocolate and boysenberry. Tastes and feels fresh, courtesy of pulsing acidity. That same acidity works to amplify the berry-cherry fruit, which is nicely accented by notes of coffee. One of NC’s best Malbec efforts we’ve tried. — M.S. (12/1/2003)

Big and attractive, with a nice blend of black cherry, rose petal, cinnamon and rubber. Quite bright on the palate, with cherry, blackberry, coffee and chocolate. With all these descriptors you can see that it’s flavorful. It’s also spunky and fairly dark. — M.S. (2/1/2004)

2003 Navarro Correas Colección Privada
Malbec, Mendoza, $10
A Best Buy

Jammy and fresh, with hints of raspberry and rhubarb. In the mouth, it’s fairly rich, with black plum and chocolate. It successfully plays both sides of the fence: It’s medium-weight and not overdone, yet it packs punch and offers layers of creamy fruit. A high-water mark for this winery. — M.S. (3/1/2005)

2001 Navarro Correas Ultra
Bordeaux Blend, Mendoza, $27

Aromatic, with blueberry and dried jerky scents. Good fruit with earthy, chocolaty nuances creates a pretty palate that follows the nose nicely. On the downside, it turns thin toward the end. But it manages to stay juicy; in some ways it tastes like Zinfandel. — M.S. (2/1/2004)

Displays character and moderate richness, as any good Merlot should. The palate offers enough dark, smoky fruit to satisfy red-wine lovers, while there’s a pleasant smoothness to the mouthfeel. 2003 Navarro Correas Coleccion Privada
Syrah, Mendoza, $11

Adequately spicy, with some meatiness to the nose. In the mouth, there's tangy cherry, modest tannin and some minor chocolate notes. Starts out tight and rubbery before opening up some; finishes deeper than it begins. — M.S. (4/1/2006)

2002 Navarro Correas Gran Reserva

Moderately powerful, with red plum, tomato and spicy wood to the nose. The palate registers as nondescript, with standard fruit and oak. Grabby tannins, butter and vanilla dominate the finish. Seems more acidic and hard than ideal. Imported by Palm Bay Imports. — M.S. (11/15/2005)
